[Tag Tuesday] Miranda Sings Tag

miranda-copy

I have no idea who Miranda Sings is so I looked her up online.. Uh, I just got through couple of her videos and I didn’t find it that funny.

This tag inspired by Miranda Sings is a lot cooler though I had a hard time coming up with 7 things I am comfortable sharing :p. Thank you for tagging me Amber!!

Rules

  • Announce your win with a post and link the blogger who nominated you.
  • Nominate 10 bloggers (or as many as you can think of) and link your awardees in the post.
  • List 7 things you love about yourself (This can be about your appearance, your personality, your achievements, etc.)
  • Don’t use negative connotation. (I.e. Don’t say things like – I’m prettier than an average person or People have told me I’m smart. You ARE pretty. You ARE smart.)

I am nominating:

The Facts:

I am good at/love about myself:

  1. Documenting and proofreading – Give me the most basic software and take back atleast a 50 page manual
  2. Sticking to a diet plan (Well, just recently realized that I find it very easy)
  3. Curbing impulsive spending
  4. Avoiding peer pressure
  5. Enjoying my own company
  6. Relishing even the most “ordinary” of streets or views as much as some world-class tourist destinations..
  7. Cruising through moments of social-awkwardness with a smile.

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag

Thank you Jill (@rantandraveaboutbooks) for the tag! This was fun! Do check out her blog.. especially the section for bloggers and writers. She has some great tips and experiences to share!

Best Book You’ve Read Yet in 2016

A Monster Calls. I loved it and am eagerly waiting for the movie. Sigh, October seems so far away..

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2016

Well, I don’t remember reading any sequels this year, but I am really looking forward to the sequel of Passenger early next year.

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To

This Savage Song. The hype on my twitter feed is insane. Reminds me of the time when Passenger was on tour.

This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity, #1)

Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year

Nothing in particular. I was waiting for Emma Cline’s The Girls which released last month. And now waiting for it to be available at the library. Love this cover!!

Biggest Disappointment

The Selection series. I have finished the first two books and while the second book is slightly better than the first, the series so far has been pretty frustrating..

Another book I was disappointed about is Dodgers. It was one of the first ARCs I received, and I liked synopsis. I hadn’t read much of literary crime fiction in the past so I was looking forward to it. I just felt that the book had so much potential and there were some moments I really liked, but I found it pretty difficult to read through the pages and finish the book.

Biggest Surprise

There are two books –

  • Surviving Valencia – because I went in expecting “typical” women’s fiction + chicklit + light suspense/thriller. But I was so wrong.

Surviving Valencia

  • A Sudden Crush – It was everything I expected, with a lot of familiar tropes. So, I was surprised by how much I liked it. I guess that’s what good storytelling is all about! It was a fun, breezy and an ideal romcom read.

A Sudden Crush

Favourite New Author

Patrick Ness!!! But, if I have to talk about debut authors, then I would pick Jung Yun for Shelter. She does have a gift for writing about families with splintered backgrounds.. and I feel her future works will be even better.

Shelter

Newest Fictional Crush

None that I can think of..

Newest Favourite Character

Hmm.. I think I will go with Kate from Vinegar Girl. With all the pressure and expectation to lead “extraordinary” lives, Kate was a different kind of protagonist.

Vinegar Girl

Book That Made You Cry

Well, not literally .. but A Monster Calls did leave a mega-lump in my throat. And another book – Hesitation Wounds. Honestly, the way Amy Koppelman talks and describes about lives changed due to clinical depression is sooo hard-hitting and blunt and .. this is definitely one of the best-written books on depression I have read in terms of prose.

Hesitation Wounds

Book That Made You Happy

Quite a few of them.. but more recently : Plan Bea .

Plan Bea

Favourite Book to Film Adaptation

Don’t remember seeing one this year.

Favourite Post You Have Done This Year

This one, of course – My love for the Harry Potter movies and my journey as a Potterhead!!

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

Most of the hardcovers I have right now are from giveaways and tours. I can’t pick one cover that stands out.

What Books Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year

Sigh .. carried over from my last year’s TBR :

Lady Chatterley's Lover

and two dozen books from this year’s TBR…

Whheewww… done!! I had so much fun doing this ..

Blogger Recognition Award

blogger-rec-award

Thanks Betty (@bookishregards) for nominating me! Do check out her blog, it is wonderful and she posts on a lot of different things! My favorite is her “Daily Prompts” section.

The rules:

  • Write a post to show your award
  • Give a brief story of how your blog started
  • Give two advice to new bloggers
  • Thank whoever nominated you and provide a link to their blog
  • Select 15 other blogs you want to give the award to

Why did I start this blog?

Well, as I mentioned in my blogoversary post, all the free time, the library (and oh, also a gift-wrapped kindle waiting for me..) prompted me to not just get back to reading, but also try blogging.

For all the new bloggers:

  • If you are going through a “blogger’s block” or don’t have posts or reviews ready, memes are a great way to break the rut. Especially the ones which are not topic-based but work more like book recommendations – like Teaser Tuesdays or Waiting on Wednesdays.
  • Don’t try starting a dozen things all at once – I mean, don’t open a Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram and Bloglovin account all in one day. Start with twitter (which is the best and the most convenient one) and maybe one other social media account and test the waters – see whether you have the time, inclination and interest to keep it updated and running. Then, slowly try other ones.

I am tagging:

Jacquie and Gina (@rattlethestarssite)

Annie (@themisstery)

and everyone else reading reading this.

Rules:

  • Show the award on your blog
  • Thank the person that has nominated you
  • Share 7 different facts about yourself
  • Nominate 15 blogs of your choice

Seven facts about me:

  • I don’t like doughnuts and cheesecakes
  • I have a pretty bad sense of direction
  • The first few days in the US, I used to switch on the television just to hear some noise. Coming from the hustle-bustle of India and its busy city streets, it took some time for me to get used to the silence here.. Now, it has been over a year and I love it here! 🙂
  • I picked up the first book of Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty series thinking it was a fairy retelling
  • After my first winter in the US, I now find snow boring
  • I want to go back to some hard-to-read classics by this August.
  • I ❤ coffee.

The Mean Girls Book Tag

the-mean-girls-1

Thank you Reg @shelatitude for tagging me!! This was fun!!

Q1)Which fictional character’s name did you get completely wrong?

A1) Hermione. I learnt to pronounce it the same time Krum did.

giphy (Source: Giphy)

Q2) Which character would you like to place in a fictional world from another book or series?

A2) I would love to swap detectives from an earlier era to someone from current one .. Like Poirot <-> Cormoran Strike maybe?

Q 3) Repetition. Repetition. Which book gave you dejavu of another book whilst reading it?

A3) I get that vibe from a lot of dystopian fiction – teenage girl unwillingly chosen and destined to lead some rebellion. And she usually has a childhood guy best friend who likes her but they will never get together. The main love interest ends up being another guy, their relationship goes from hate->love and the guy is usually “eligible” to be able to partner her on her new journey as the “chosen one”, unlike the childhood friend who is left behind..

Q4) Which book gave you the complete opposite of girl power feels?

A4) Gambit (The Prodigy Chronicles #1). by C.L. Denault. I loved the book till Willow decides that she is in love with the physically-aggressive-bordering-on-violent Reece.

Q5) Name a character you felt like you wanted to cheer on whilst reading.

A5) Kat from The Ugly Stepsister by Aya Ling.

Q6) How long do you typically spend at a book shop.

A6) Half an hour maybe.

Q7)Which character would have to get out a restraining order on you, if they were real.

A7) Hmm.. can’t think of anyone.

Q8) Which overhyped book were you cautious about reading?

A8) Passenger, by Alexandra Bracken, because of all the hype on twitter and elsewhere. I really liked the book, though. I think it is partly because I haven’t read much of time-travel fiction so everything felt new and fresh.

Q9) We all love Regina George. Name a villain you just love to hate.

A9) Oh, so many from HP. I think I loved to hate Umbridge and Bellatrix more after Imelda Staunton and Helena Bonham Carter’s amazing portrayals!

Q10) Your favorite fictional parent

A10) Apart from the Weasleys (<3) , Hans Hubermann from The Book Thief – By Markus Zusak and Angelica’s dad (Edgar) from In the Context of Love – By Linda K Sienkiewicz.

Q11) Which book or series would you love to catch on?

A11) The Orphan Queen and Mirror King duology , Lunar Chronicles.

Q12) Describe your ideal character to read about

A12) Flawed characters are fun to read. I think any character that is basically not the same by the time you reach the last page of a book – who has learnt from all the goof-ups ranging from selfish to self-destructive. A bit of dark or self-deprecating humor would be perfect!

Q13) What do you do when a book gives you a bad case of ‘the feels’?

A13) I just keep thinking about it over a cup of coffee.

Q14) Which characters one lines would you love to claim for your own?

A14) Nitwit!Blubber!Oddment!Tweak! Dumbly-dorr FTW! :p

Q15) Name a character’s decision that has made you roll your eyes

A15) This applies to so many characters – Making some noble self-sacrificing decision though it might not be entirely necessary. But sometimes, I forget about it by the end of the book if the emotional and dramatic payoff is satisfactory.
