The Grownup

I received this book via Megan’s giveaway. This is one of the novellas that has been on my TBR for quite sometime (the other being Kindred Spirits by Rainbow Rowell).

My Teasers:

She called me Nerdy because I wore glasses and read books and ate yogurt on my lunch break. I am not really a nerd; I only aspire to be one. (Page 10)

Loreena's Gift by Colleen M. Story

I just starting reading Loreena’s Gift by Colleen M. Story. I will be reviewing the book as a part of iRead Book Tours (Check out this page for more information about the book and tour)

My Teasers:

At times like these, his voice reminded Loreena of the cello, like the smooth, sonorous tone she achieved when she pulled the long bow over the thick strings, the vibration steady between her knees. It was one of the few things they had in common, this ability to produce sounds that soothed the human spirit. (Page 14)

So, I read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson after Cristina recommended it in her post here. I really liked it, especially the way it addressed the impact of social isolation in the minds of high-school teenagers. However, the main issue it tackles is PTSD in the aftermath of rape; and without giving away anything, I almost wished there were 50 more pages …

This book was released more than 15 years ago and I can see why it was considered path-breaking at that time.  I loved the narrative voice and though the book is pretty short (around 200 pages) , it feels longer because of the way it is written; – short but many chapters.

My teasers from the last couple of pages:

“I draw them without thinking – flight, flight, feather, wing. Water drips on the paper and the birds bloom in the light, their feathers expanding promise.”
